Golden Rules for Residences

Land / Plot : -

Square shape plot is best.

  • Regular shapes, rectangular, cow-faced are also acceptable.
  • Odd shaped plots e.g. triangle, cleaver-shaped, oval shaped, chariot wheel, hexagon, octagon and irregular parallelograms are not desirable.
  • All irregular and odd shaped plots need to be divided or modified so that more closely plots approximate a square or rectangle.
  • Axis of land should match with the magnetic axis of the Earth.
  • Road on four sides is best, but it is very difficult to get.
  • Roads in North or East is very good.
  • Chief aspects of tasting the soil are colour, odour, taste, hardness, density, porous-ness and level.
  • Slope should be towards North or East, if not it should be made artificially, by landscaping and or split level flooring. 
  • History of plot of land should also be looked into before final selection. 

Building: -

  • Open space on North / East should be more than South / West.
  • Orientation of the building should be parallel to the sides of the land.
  • Building should be laid out parallel to at least one cardinal direction.
  • Square shape building is best. Regular shape buildings are good.
  • Develop a ground gradient from South West to North East.
  • Floor and Roof level should be highest in SW.
  • Have a compound wall on all sides of the house.
  • Never open the South-West of either your compound or building.
  • Never have the main door of the building or compound in South-West.
  • Create a water body boring and under ground sump in the North East at all cost.
  • Height of the entrance door should be more than other doors in the flat.
  • Maximum number of the openings be given in the North and the East.
  • Minimum number of openings be given in the South and the West. This is important for cross ventilation.
  • Height of the ground story be a little more than the upper stories.
  • Stairs be kept in the South West.
  • Select cosmetic finishes which breathe and filter.
  • The roof should haven an apex or a ridge or a slant.
  • Raise the floor level to block the negative radiation from down below the earth.
  • Provide a slant or an apex in the roof to drive more benefit from the cosmic energy.
  • Keep fresh flowers, green plants, water fountain and room fresheners.
  • Keep perfect insulators like glass, wood and dry leather objects and quartz glass in your surroundings to combat negativities.
  • Go in from maximum clockwise actions in all your activities for concentration of energy.

Compound Walls –

  • Compound (perimeter) walls should be constructed on all the sides.
  • West and South walls should be higher and thicker in comparison to North and East walls.
  • Building should be away from compound walls. More space should be allowed on the East and North.
  • Rules for entrance are similar to compound gate also. 

Special Beneficial points as to High Rise Building-

  • Ventilation improves as we go higher
  • Pollution decreases as we go higher
  • Intensity of cosmic energy increases as we go higher
  • The effect of negative radiation from down below the earth decreases rapidly as you go higher and it is almost reduced after the fifth floo

Bed room: -

  • Square and rectangular shaped bedrooms are the best.
  • Master bed room should preferably be in SW.
  • North West / SE bed room is good for girls / guests.
  • South bed room is good for adult male and female.
  • Bed should not be below the beam.
  • Wardrobe should be on South and or West wall.
  • Beds should be of good quality wood. They should be solid and must not be shaky.
  • The mattress should provide good support to the body while resting.

  • Box beds are ideally not recommended. Due to paucity of space in our houses in general and flats in particulars these days, getting rid of box beds is easier said than done. Make sure to declutter and sort out things kept in the box-beds from time to time.
  • Shoes, chappals etc. should not be kept under a bed. Try to keep the area under the bed as clean as possible.
  • Your bedroom should be a place where you can totally relax. Keep objects that remind you of unfinished tasks out of the room or at least out of sight.
  • A bedroom should be aesthetically designed with soothing colors and pictures. Have pleasant pictures associated with happy memories around you.
  • Do not place a mirror directly in front of the bed.
  • The Southwest area of the bedroom should not be kept empty. Keep heavy furniture or almirah here.
  • Do not have any picture or statue of Gods and Goddesses in the bedroom.
  • No door should be in front of the bed.
  • Avoid door in the South West of a bedroom.
  • The bed should be placed in a position where the occupants can see anyone coming into the rooms.
  • Color Combination of Bedsheet, bed cover, upholstery zone and curtain etc should be chosen as per Jyotish Shastra guideline of the inmates. Paint should be as per the direction of the bed room.
  • Objects of art and paintings to be kept in Bed Room should be properly chosen to get positive vibrations.
  • Attached Toilet, Bathroom, dressing room should be properly planned as regards dictum of orientations.
  • Cupboards containing property papers, documents, valuables, cash and jewellery should be kept in the South-West side of the master bedroom. The cupboards should open towards North or East.
  • Children’s bedroom should be in West or East. Children can keep their head towards East. 

Direction of Head while Sleeping –

  • For beds in the East west direction, the head should be in the East and legs towards the West.
  • For beds in the North south direction, the head should be in the South and legs towards the North.
  • Sleep with head towards South far sound sleep and good health. Never keep your head forwards North.
  • Children may keep their head towards East. 

Kitchen: -

  • Location of ideal kitchen is shown below –

  • Kitchen should be in either SE or North West.
  • It should not be in NE / SW / center.
  • Cooking gas should be on East platform.
  • Cooking oven should neither face the main door nor the toilet door.
  • Cooking stoves should not be placed directly under a toilet on the floor above.
  • Kitchen and cooking oven should never be in the middle or central portion of the house or flat.
  • Placing the cooking gas oven under a staircase is also bad.
  • Drinking water should be in NE.
  • It is better to have cupboards on west or south sides with fewer shelves.
  • Stone or Marble should be used for kitchen platform. Granite should be avoided.
  • Stainless steel sinks are generally good. It should be positioned in from of window towards North or East if not exactly on the North-east.
  • Food grains and cereals should be kept inside covered racks. Crockery may be kept inside glass shelves.
  • General good colors for kitchen are pink, yellow and blue.
  • One door in kitchen is good. If two doors are lined up so that they are opposite to each other it is bad and it must be avoided at all costs.
  • In an open kitchen plan also all the guidelines should be taken care of.
  • Cutlery in general and knives in particular should always be kept safely preferably in a drawer. Bins should have a lid on them. Emptying them very often is beneficial.
  • Refrigerator should be kept away from the cooking oven because of their nature of opposite elements. Good color for the refrigerator is white, blue, green and silver.
  • Fridge should not be kept in North-east or South-east corner.
  • Exhaust fans are good provided these are placed correctly. It is not bad if a large window exists in the kitchen to get rid of cooking odours and unhealthy smells.
  • The washing machine should be kept on the Northwest side. Better to avoid washing in kitchen because the elements clash between themselves.
  • The kitchen should have good air and ample sunlight. Arrangements should also be made for sufficient light during the night.
  • Kitchen should be periodically de-cluttered. Also, all possible sound polluting equipment should be repaired to avoid noisy sounds of viz., squeaking machines, vibrating refrigerators, roaring exhaust fans and humming mixers. 

Puja and Meditation Room –

  • Puja room should be in North-East sector of a residence.
  • Puja and meditation room may be in the North East zone.
  • It may also be provided in central zone of a flat or a Bungalow.
  • Idols in the puja room should be placed in such a way that while worshiping the face of the person offering prayers should be towards East.
  • Never have a Puja room under a staircase.

Photographs and Paintings –

  • Photographs/paintings of deities should be on the Northern and or Eastern walls.
  • Recommended paintings, photographs and art objects are: Kuldevta, Kuldevi, Kalash, Conch shell, Lotus, cow with calf, natural scenes depicting beauty and growth, singing and dancing beauties, Peacocks, Swan, Duck and Birds and Pictures showing happiness and positiveness.
  • Pictures and paintings depicting violence, death, disease and despair should not be displayed in the house as they create negativity.
  • Do not keep photographs of departed ancestors in the Puja place. These photographs can be hung on the southern and western wall facing North separately. 

Mirror, watches and clocks –

  • Place the mirrors on the East or North walls.
  • Broken mirrors, stopped watches should not be kept in the house.
  • Never have mirror opposite the bed.
  • Wall clocks should be hung on North or East walls.
  • Timepieces should never be positioned on Southern walls. 

Study Room –

Study room is preferred in East, North East and West. Students should study facing East or North. Professionals having large book shelves and libraries should be preferable position their study room either in South West or West.

Dining room: -

  • Dining room should be in East and or between West and NW depending on location of kitchen.
  • While dining the head person should face East.
  • Master should use West or South chair.
  • Chairs should be in even numbers.
  • While dining face should be towards North or East.
  • Dinning table should not be placed directly below or above the toilet.
  • Crystal chandelier in ceiling is preferred above the dinning table.

Drawing room: -

  • Master’s back should not be towards main entry.
  • Sitting should be facing North or East.
  • LCD or Plasma T. V. should be on East wall.
  • Other entertainment gadgets viz., VCD, Radio etc should be kept on the West wall.

Living Room –

  • Living has become a must for even a one-room apartment.
  • It is preferred in North or Eastern direction.
  • If central zone is planned as living room heavy furniture should be avoided.

Toilet: -

  • Should be between NW and West, between SE and East, between SW and South.
  • Should never be in NE or SW or Central portion.
  • Pan position should be kept on North or South axis.
  • Wash basin and shower should be on North / East wall.
  • A single bathroom is allowed in the East zone. Since North and East are source directions of energy, toilets are negative in these zones.

Entrance & Main door: -

  • Entrance door should be bigger in comparison with rest of the doors.
  • Height of the door should be twice its width.
  • Door should always be placed accurately upright.
  • Total number of doors, windows and ventilators on each floor should be in even numbers but should end with zero (10, 20, 30 etc.)
  • Dwar dosh i.e. any obstruction in-front of the gate / door like tree, pole, column, lift, staircase, well etc. within a distance twice the height of the door should be avoided.
  • Have the main entrance in the exalted grids as per Vaastu guidelines. The main door should be the biggest door in the residence. It should preferably be of two shutters.
  • Divide any direction into nine parts. Of these the fourth part from the left is the auspicious division for an entrance. If the entrance is at the place other than this, then a pyramidal canopy is necessary over the door as a remedial measure.
  • Detail gate position is given below –
  • It should be remembered that main door should never be to the East of South East, West or South of South West and North of North West.
  • In addition to ‘nine part formula’ other permissible main doors are East or North of North East, South of South East and West of North West.
  • There should be no obstruction in front of the main gate.
  • Maximum openings in the North and East bring in beneficial Infra Red Rays.
  • Minimum openings in the South and West blocks the harmful Ultra Violet rays 

Exit Door –

  • Exit door may be provided on the other side depending on the main entrance door.
  • Exit door should be smallest door of the building. 

Windows, opening and verandah: -

  • East, North, North East and North West must be kept open. Equally important is the cross ventilation.     
  • Most of the windows and doors should be towards the North and East sides.
  • For the South side windows, use yellow color glass and provide a pyramidal canopy.
  • For the West side windows use blue color glass and provide a pyramidal canopy. 

Balcony Position –

  • Position of balcony and terrace should be in the North or East.
  • For balconies in the South and West zones provide a false ceiling. 

Security Cabin: -

  • Security Cabin should be provided in North West or South East zone.
  • Cabin walls should not touch North or East boundaries of the Plot.
  • Security personnel should face North or East direction wile working.

Landscape and Gardening: -

  • Northwest is an ideal direction for a garden in a house. However, Northeast may be utilized for maintaining Herbarium and very small plants and foliage.
  • The shadow of large trees should not fall on the roof of the building between 00 A.M. to 3.00 P.M.
  • Almond and Christmas trees are suitable in the South and West zones of the plot. Plant a banyan tree in East, Peepal tree in West, pluksha tree in North and audumber in the South zone.

Do not have any thorny or milk like fluid producing plants in the house.

Terrace garden: -

  • In metro cities terrace garden is always welcome but it should not be in South West.
  • South East Terrace garden is tolerable but North West and North East terrace garden are the best for morning Sunlight a well as infrared rays. 

Central Court Yard and Open Terrace: -

  • The central portion of the building should be free from any important structural elements such as column, beam etc.
  • Keep the centre of the building and the centre of the plot free from any loads, beams, pillars, columns and wells.
  • This central area is considered 6.25% of total built up area. So, planning should be done accordingly.
  • Central portion of both the Grihanabhi (center of the structure) and Brahmanbhi (center of the site) should be calculated separately and taken care of properly.

Staircase: -

  • A staircase represents blockage and load, hence is highly appreciated in the Southeast, South, Southwest and West zones.
  • A staircase in the North and Northeast zones leads to negative results.
  • While climbing, stair should always turn in clockwise direction and at first the person climbing should face North or West.
  • The final step should be towards South or East.
  • Internal staircase in a house should not be directly opposite the front door.
  • External staircase should not be directly opposite the main door or crossing the main entrance.
  • of risers should always be in odd numbers. The best numbers of risers are 5,11,17,23. 

Lifts and Elevators: -

  • Southeast is the best position for lift and elevators.
  • Northwest may also be utilized for installation of lift or elevator.
  • Lift and elevators should never be provided either in North East or in the central zone. 

Basements and Zone –

  • It should be kept in mind that the basement disturbs the soil layers.
  • The basement, being a type of depressions in the plinth, can be adjusted in the North, Northeast and East zones.
  • The Northeast zone is best for basement. In all other zones, refill it with heavy stones.
  • Construct an additional room in the Southwest zone with towering height and a pyramidal roof.
  • A basement in the Southeast, South, Southwest and West zones gives severe negative results. 

Underground water tank –

  • An underground water tank should be in the Northeast part of the plot. This is mandatory irrespective of openings. 
  • Tube well, bore well, under ground tank etc., should be provided in following direction

Overhead water tank –

  • West zone is best for placing overhead tank on land.
  • It should not be provided in South East and North West
  • Overhead tank, kept at elevated level on terrace, should be provided in West or South West or South zone.

Transformer & Generator –

  • Place the transformer and electricity supply generator in the Southeast.
  • Northwest direction may also be utilized for keeping transformer and generator.

Septic tank –

  • Provide a septic tank with a pyramidal top in the Northwest part.
  • It may also be provided in areas as shown below  

Garages and Outhouses –

  • Garages and outhouses are allowed in the South, Southwest and West zones.
  • Garages in Southeast and Northwest zones will not get bad results.
  • Garage in the Northeast or central zone is not permissible.

Main Safe –

  • Keep the heavy safe in such position that the door opens to the North and its position is near the South wall.
  • Chest or cabinet containing cash, cheques etc. should be kept in North direction facing East.
